flowers for roof terraces

flower meanings
We look after several courtyard gardens & roof terraces for our London clients. It is a luxury to have some outdoor space in central London – a place to eat, have a coffee, or read a book.

The most suitable plants for the outdoor space must be selected. What time of day do you have sunshine? How much maintenance will they have? Have you chosen plants to provide all year round colour?

I’ve been working on a small roof terrace this week. As a fan of perennials, that’s what I’ve used. Two large shrubs – an olive & a bay, have added some height, along with two Chilean potato plants, climbing up the walls. I’ve then opted for some rosemary & lavender, both for scent. There are herbs in smaller pots – basil, mint, coriander, chives, parsley & marjoram – so lovely to be able to pop out & cut some fresh herbs for dinner!

I’ve added some colour with aquilegia, violets, lupins & forget-me-nots, & have buried some aubretia amongst the shingle in the hope that it will spread.

You can slowly add flowering plants so that the garden has something beautiful during every season. This little terrace just needs some candles & a really comfy chair with huge cushions!
