Our Managing Director Janet Davies founded Stems in 1985. Here she shares her thoughts on how she became passionate about flowers and the early days of Stems.
"Flowers are in my blood. Early memories of picking wild flowers on country walks holding my grandfather's hand as he cut dahlias - like treasure for me. My mother loved to take us walking in Windsor Great Park, and we would stop at The Copper Horse, admiring the view of The Long Walk and making daisy chains. I would collect tansy on the banks of The Thames and mix with garden rose petals to make perfume.
My career began in Stockholm where I trained as a florist for several years. Upon returning to the UK I set up Stems in Bloomsbury close to where I studied at UCL. My wild and natural bouquets caught the eye of Time Out and Central St. Martins College of Art.
The first six months were slow, and we made flower deliveries to Holborn and Bloomsbury. We picked up a few accounts from offices needing weekly reception flowers
Work at St. James Palace, ENO, the Lalique Private View, ITV, and celebrity clients soon followed. Today we have an established portfolio of loyal clients and recently celebrated our 35th anniversary"

We started delivering flowers in Holborn and Bloomsbury, and then soon began flower delivery in W1, Mayfair, Marylebone and Soho. We worked for a beautiful hotel called the Ramada, just off Oxford St., and the Kenilworth in Bloomsbury, supplying weekly flowers for the hotel reception and conference rooms, as well as bouquets for VIP guest bedrooms. We also provided plants for the flowering window boxes and indoor plants for reception areas.
In the early 90's, we supplied flowers for The Aspel Show at ITV on The South Bank, and were then asked to supply all the flowers for star talent, Green Rooms and Dressing Rooms at ITV, for all the major shows over the years, including Cilla Black's Blind Date, Barrymore, Michael Parkinson, Ant & Dec, The Graham Norton Show and I'm a Celebrity. There's not a Hollywood star who has graced the ITV building that hasn't received flowers from Stems! We still deliver to The South Bank and SE1 area, with same day and next day delivery available.
Many of our clients are in the legal profession and our flower shop is near High Holborn, Kingsway, Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn, where we deliver flowers daily, and weekly office flowers for your reception, as well as flowers for corporate events and business meetings.
There is a beautiful new apartment block on Lincoln's Inn where we deliver flowers for the home on a weekly subscription basis, as well as green and flowering plants.
Our wedding flower service covers all surrounding areas, including Holborn, Bloomsbury, Covent Garden, Ely Place, Farringdon, Clerkenwell, Islington, King's Cross, Green Park and Mayfair. There are some amazing wedding venues - one of the most interesting this year was the concourse at St. Pancras Station! If you would like something more traditional, Inner Temple, Grays Inn 'or St George's Bloomsbury may be more suitable.
